Dr. Roland Clayton (Clay) Merchant is an emergency medicine physician, epidemiologist and researcher. He serves as Associate Director of Research for the Department of Emergency Medicine, Brigham and Women’s Hospital. He is an Attending Physician in the Brigham and Women’s Hospital Department of Emergency Medicine. Dr. Merchant’s research concerns the intersection of infectious diseases, substance use, public health and emergency medicine. Some of his research interests include facilitating HIV, hepatitis C and sexually transmitted infections testing; improving knowledge, motivation and behavioral skills around HIV/AIDS and HIV testing; assessing health literacy; substance use screening and interventions; management of blood or body fluid exposures; and enabling use of pre- and post-exposure prophylaxis for HIV and other infectious agents.
